What Are Steel-Toe Safety Shoes?

Safety shoes (also called industrial safety footwear or steel-toe boots) are protective footwear with a reinforced steel or composite toecap that shields the foot from crushing and impact injuries. The toecap is tested to withstand a 200 joule impact — equivalent to a 20 kg weight falling from approximately 1 metre — without the cap deforming enough to injure the toes inside. The sole is slip-resistant, puncture-resistant (against nails and sharp objects) and energy-absorbing at the heel.

IS 15298 Part II is the BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards) specification that defines these requirements for the Indian market. Safety shoes bearing the ISI mark against IS 15298 Part II have been independently tested — this certification is what contractors, PWD and factory safety officers require when auditing PPE on sites.

Multi Trade Combines stocks IS 15298 Part II certified safety shoes at our AT Road, Guwahati counter in a range of sizes for workers on construction sites, fabrication workshops and industrial facilities across Northeast India.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does IS 15298 Part II mean for safety shoes?

IS 15298 Part II is the Bureau of Indian Standards specification for occupational footwear with protective toecaps. It defines the minimum requirements for impact resistance (the toecap must withstand a 200 joule impact without deformation that would injure the foot), compression resistance, anti-static properties, penetration resistance of the sole (against a nail or sharp object from below), energy absorption at the heel, and slip resistance of the outsole. Shoes carrying the ISI mark against IS 15298 Part II have been tested and certified by BIS — this is the standard specified by PWD, NHIDCL, construction companies and factories for their site workers. Non-ISI footwear may not provide adequate protection and can be rejected by site safety officers.

Are safety shoes mandatory on construction sites in Assam?

Yes — under the Building and Other Construction Workers (BOCW) Act 1996 and the BOCW (Regulation of Employment and Conditions of Service) Central Rules 1998, the principal employer is required to provide personal protective equipment including safety footwear to workers on construction sites. Safety shoes are also specified in most civil engineering contract requirements for NHIDCL, PWD and private construction projects in Assam, Meghalaya and across the Northeast. Enforcement has increased in recent years on major NH and railway construction sites. We supply safety shoes in sizes appropriate for both male and female workers.
