A single-stage reciprocating compressor compresses air from atmospheric pressure to delivery pressure in one piston stroke — suitable for pressure requirements up to around 10 bar and power ratings up to about 5 HP. A two-stage compressor compresses the air first in a larger low-pressure cylinder, then cools it in an intercooler before a second compression stage to the final delivery pressure.
