A standard oxy-acetylene cutting torch with an appropriate cutting tip can cut mild steel from 3 mm to over 300 mm thickness. The thickness capacity is determined by the cutting nozzle (tip) size — larger nozzle orifices deliver more oxygen flow for cutting thicker steel. For most structural steel fabrication in Northeast India (cutting plates up to 25 mm, sections up to 50 mm), a medium cutting nozzle is sufficient. A cutting torch is specifically designed for oxy-fuel metal cutting — it has a central high-volume oxygen jet surrounded by a pre-heating flame ring, and the operator controls the cutting oxygen separately with a lever or valve. The high oxygen jet burns through the steel at the cut line. A blow pipe (welding torch) is for oxy-fuel welding and heating — it mixes oxygen and acetylene in a nozzle that produces a continuous flame for melting and joining metal, but does not have the high-volume cutting oxygen delivery.
