Use a thin cutting disc (1–1.6 mm thick) to slice through metal, tile or stone, and a thick grinding disc (4–6 mm) to remove material, deburr cuts and smooth welds. Never use a cutting disc for grinding or a grinding disc for cutting — thickness and bond structure are different. Multi Trade Combines stocks both at our Guwahati counter.
A cutting disc is thin — typically 1.0 mm to 1.6 mm — with a reinforced fibreglass mesh that keeps it from flexing under the cutting load. The thin profile allows it to slice cleanly through mild steel flat bar, rebar, angle iron, ERW pipe, ceramic tiles and stone. They are designed to cut in a straight, plunge line only; any lateral pressure or twisting can shatter the disc dangerously.
For a Bosch GWS 600 or GWS 850 angle grinder, use the matching 115 mm or 125 mm cutting disc. Never mount a 230 mm disc on a 125 mm machine — always match disc diameter to the guard and rated speed of your grinder.
A grinding disc is thick — 4 mm to 8 mm — with a depressed-centre (Type 27) profile that lets you work at a low angle without the body of the wheel fouling the workpiece. The coarser, harder abrasive removes surface material quickly: weld spatter, rust scale, sharp edges, casting flash and surface corrosion. Grinding discs are meant to be used at 10–30° to the work surface, not straight on.
A common mistake is using a grinding disc to make cuts — the thick body wastes material, overheats rapidly and can bind in the cut, causing kickback. Keep the two disc types separate and clearly labelled on site to prevent accidents. See our angle grinder buying guide for more on safe disc use.
Diamond cutting blades are used for ceramic tiles, granite, concrete and stone — they have embedded diamond segments rather than bonded abrasive. Flap discs (layered abrasive flaps) combine grinding and finishing in one disc: excellent for smoothing welds and removing light surface rust without deep gouging. Wire cup brushes are for paint and corrosion removal without removing base metal.

No — you must always use a disc rated for the grinder's speed (RPM) and match the disc diameter to the machine's guard size. Using an undersized disc on a large machine or exceeding a disc's max RPM is dangerous. Always check the disc's max RPM on the label.
Replace a cutting disc when it is worn down to 70% of its original diameter, or immediately if it shows any cracks, chips or exposed mesh. A worn disc cuts slowly, overheats and is a safety hazard. Keep spare discs on site.
