Concrete/masonry core drills are rated by the maximum core bit diameter and whether they are handheld or rig-mounted. For small pipes (up to 75 mm) a handheld 2.5 kg drill is manageable; for 150 mm+ diameter penetrations in thick slabs a rig-mounted drill with water cooling is necessary.
Magnetic drills for steel (like the BDS MAB 100 K) attach magnetically to the steel surface and use annular cutters — no separate rig needed. Ideal for structural steel, tanks and platforms.

A regular twist drill removes all the material from the hole as chips and dust. A core drill uses a hollow cylindrical bit to cut a ring around a solid core, which pops out as one piece. This is far faster and cleaner in hard materials like concrete, especially for large diameters (50 mm to 400 mm+) where twist drills are impractical.
