Why 630 A — and who genuinely needs it

Most fabrication workshops weld structural steel in the 6–20 mm thickness range. A 250–400 A inverter welder handles this comfortably, and the Shakti MMA series at those ratings covers the majority of commercial fabrication work in Northeast India. But there is a distinct class of industrial welding job where a lighter machine is simply inadequate: thick-plate pressure vessel manufacture and repair, heavy crane boom fabrication, bridge-girder welding, earthmoving equipment chassis repair, and hardfacing of wear surfaces on mining or quarrying equipment.

These jobs involve base metal thicknesses from 25 mm to 50 mm or more, multi-pass root and fill welds on butt joints, and continuous arc times that generate sustained heat input into the machine as well as the workpiece. A 400 A machine pushed near its rated output overheats and trips on thermal protection within minutes of sustained heavy-pass welding. The MMA-630 SiC is designed for this duty: its silicon-carbide power-switching stage operates at far higher efficiency than the IGBT transistors used in conventional machines, generating less heat internally per ampere of welding current and therefore sustaining higher continuous currents without the thermal interruptions that frustrate production welding.

SiC (silicon carbide) semiconductor technology is newer and costlier than standard silicon IGBT-based designs, but it delivers demonstrable advantages at extreme current ratings: smaller machine footprint per ampere, lower electricity consumption (important in northeast India where grid power quality is variable and electricity costs are high), and longer component life under heavy duty. Heavy fabrication shops in Guwahati's Sarusajai industrial area, shipbuilding support workshops in port towns, and government engineering workshops undertaking rail and bridge maintenance across the Northeast are the natural buyers for this machine.

Multi Trade Combines is an authorised Shakti dealer in Guwahati. The full Shakti welding range — from the 200 A ARC-200N starter machine through MIG, TIG, plasma cutter, and up to this 630 A SiC model — is available with genuine warranty support. Pair this machine with ESAB high-deposition electrodes (7018 or hardfacing grades) and a proper 3-phase supply sized for 630 A welding load.

FAQ

What is the difference between Shakti MMA-630 SiC and Shakti MMA-400CI?

The MMA-400CI is a 3-phase 400 A inverter machine suited to heavy fabrication and structural work. The MMA-630 SiC is a step up in a different direction: 630 A capacity using silicon-carbide (SiC) power semiconductors which provide exceptional thermal efficiency and duty-cycle performance at this current rating. The 630 A is for the heaviest industrial MMA welding: thick plate, pressure vessel, heavy structural steel, and hardfacing work where 400 A is insufficient.

Does the MMA-630 SiC require any special installation or power supply?

Yes. At 630 A, this machine draws a substantial 3-phase load. It requires a dedicated 3-phase 415 V supply with appropriate MCB and cable sizing as specified in the installation manual. It should not share a circuit with sensitive electronics or be operated from a small generator. Multi Trade Combines can advise on electrical supply requirements and compatible ESAB or other heavy-duty electrodes suitable for use at 630 A.
