How to Choose Aluminium Ladders and Platform Steps for NE India

Written by the counter team at Multi Trade Combines — 35 years supplying NE workshops. Ladders and platform steps are among the most misused safety products on NE India work sites — wrong type, wrong height, wrong surface. This guide covers what to buy and why, from basic 5-step platforms for maintenance teams to taller units for commercial fit-out contractors in Guwahati.

Why ladder selection matters

Written by the counter team at Multi Trade Combines — 35 years supplying NE workshops.

Ladders and access platforms are deceptively simple products, but the wrong choice leads to falls — the leading cause of serious injuries on NE India's construction and maintenance sites. Aluminium platform ladders are the correct choice for the vast majority of indoor and semi-outdoor elevated work tasks. We stock platform ladders in 5-step and 7-step variants at our Guwahati counter, available in our Ladders catalogue, alongside the 5-step and 7-step product pages.

Types of aluminium ladders — what exists

TypeDescriptionTypical Use in NE India
Platform ladder (self-supporting)A-frame with flat top platform + guardrail; self-supportingIndoor maintenance, painting, false ceiling, electrical work
A-frame stepladderA-frame with narrow rungs; self-supporting; NOT a standing platformQuick reaching tasks; not for prolonged standing
Extension ladderTwo-section telescoping; leans against wallExternal facade work, exterior painting, roofing access
Single straight ladderOne section; leans against wall; no self-supportSimple access; lower cost; lower safety for extended tasks
Folding multi-position ladder4-section articulating; multiple configurationsVersatile for varied heights and configurations

Step-by-step buying guide

6 decisions from height to quantity

  1. Determine the required working height. Working height = height of the platform you will stand on + a person's comfortable reach (about 1 m above standing level for tool use). For ceiling work in a 3 m room, you need a platform at about 2.2 m — requiring a 7-step platform ladder. For 2.4 m ceilings, a 5-step (approx. 1.5 m platform) is usually adequate with comfortable reach extension.
  2. Choose platform vs A-frame. For any task where you will spend more than a minute at height, or where you need both hands free, specify a platform ladder with guardrail. The 5-step and 7-step models we stock have a wide platform with a rear guardrail — a worker can stand naturally with both hands on the ceiling without gripping the ladder for balance.
  3. Verify the load rating. Check the manufacturer's maximum working load against your worst-case scenario (heaviest worker + heaviest tool load). IS 6896 compliance is the minimum — look for IS-marked aluminium ladders where possible.
  4. Check the footprint and storage dimensions. For use in small rooms or narrow corridors — common in NE India's older commercial buildings — measure the folded ladder width against doorway widths. Platform ladders fold flat to approximately 35–40 cm width in most standard 5- and 7-step models, fitting through standard 800 mm doorways.
  5. Inspect the rubber feet before buying. The rubber feet are what keep the ladder stationary on tile, concrete and polished floors. They should be flat, intact and firmly attached to the side rails. Worn or missing rubber feet are a serious hazard and cannot easily be replaced in the field — it is better to specify new ladders with intact feet than to buy old stock at a discount.
  6. Consider the quantity for site use. Construction sites in Guwahati doing apartment fit-out or commercial fit-out often need 4–8 platform ladders simultaneously on different floors. We offer competitive pricing on multi-unit orders — call or WhatsApp us for a site supply quote.

NE India conditions — what to watch

Monsoon: Aluminium does not rust, but the rubber feet and locking mechanisms can degrade with constant wet exposure. Dry ladders after use in wet conditions and check that the locking clips at the hinge engage positively — a partially open A-frame is the most common single ladder failure mode. Do not use aluminium ladders outdoors during monsoon lightning — the entire aluminium frame conducts electricity. Store indoors during heavy rain periods.

Construction dust: Fine concrete dust that accumulates on hinge pivots can cause lock mechanisms to stick. Wipe hinge areas clean and apply a light lubricant every 3 months on frequently used ladders. Inspect rivets on side rails quarterly — vibration from construction activity can loosen press-fit rivets on budget ladders, particularly on the steps (rungs), which is the highest-stress location.

Chemical exposure: Paint, tile adhesive, and cement splashes are inevitable in NE India's finishing trades. Aluminium is not affected by most construction chemicals, but dried adhesive on the steps creates a non-slip texture — which sounds helpful but actually traps grit that can scratch and damage polished floors. Clean steps after use on tile work.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the weight rating of a typical aluminium platform ladder?

Most aluminium platform ladders sold for industrial use in India are rated at 150 kg maximum working load, which is the ladder's own weight plus the user plus tools and materials on the platform. For heavier users or where workers carry heavy toolbags, verify the manufacturer's load rating — some budget ladders are rated at only 100 kg. The load rating is typically stamped or moulded on the ladder side rail. IS 6896 governs aluminium ladders in India — IS-marked ladders have been tested to their stated load capacity.

Should I buy a platform ladder or a conventional A-frame stepladder?

For work where you need to stand and use both hands freely — painting, plumbing, electrical, shelving installation — a platform ladder is significantly safer than an A-frame stepladder. The top tread of an A-frame is typically not designed for standing (most have a 'Do Not Stand' warning), whereas a platform ladder's top platform is specifically designed as a working surface with a guardrail. For quick one-off reaching tasks where you simply need to grab something above your head, an A-frame stepladder is adequate and more compact to store and carry.

How do I use a platform ladder safely on NE India's sloped floors or ground?

Many construction sites in NE India have sloped ground, uneven concrete, or tile floors with grout lines. Before using a platform ladder on an uneven surface: check that all four rubber feet contact the ground — if one foot is off the ground, the ladder is unstable. Some platform ladders have a levelling mechanism on the rear legs for use on slopes up to a limited angle; check this before purchasing if your work environment has significant slope. Do not place ladder feet on loose materials, sand or wet polythene sheeting. On smooth tiles, the non-slip rubber feet must be in good condition — worn or cracked rubber feet on polished tile are a slip hazard.
