Not necessarily for a small shop. A 250A MMA inverter welder runs on single-phase 230V supply. An angle grinder (1,000–2,200W) and bench drill (350–750W) also run on single phase. Three-phase is needed if you add a lathe, milling machine, large compressor or 400A+ welding machine. Most small fabrication shops in Assam start on single phase and add three-phase when they grow.
Minimum mandatory PPE for fabrication: auto-darkening or standard welding helmet (for the welder), welding gloves, safety boots (steel-toe), safety glasses for grinding, and ear protection for sustained grinding work. A fire extinguisher (CO2 or dry powder type) at the welding station is non-negotiable. KARAM safety helmets and harnesses are needed if work at height is involved.
