What PPE Is Needed for Welding Work?

Every welder needs: auto-darkening welding helmet, leather welding gloves, flame-resistant welding jacket, safety glasses, steel-toe boots, ear protection, and a respirator or fume extractor. Multi Trade Combines stocks all welding PPE at our AT Road, Guwahati counter for welders and fabrication shops across Northeast India.

Head, Eye and Face Protection

Welding helmet: The most critical piece — shields face, eyes and neck from arc flash, UV radiation, IR radiation and weld spatter. An auto-darkening welding helmet (shade 9–13 adjustable) is the professional standard: the lens reacts in milliseconds to the arc strike, letting you see clearly before and after the weld without lifting the helmet. Fixed-shade helmets (shade 10 or 11) are cheaper but slower to use.

Safety glasses: Worn under the helmet or during grinding and chipping. A flying spatter or chip can still reach the eyes when the helmet is lifted. Side-shield safety glasses are the minimum; consider clear goggles for chipping slag.

Body, Hand and Foot Protection

Welding gloves: Heavy leather welding gloves (gauntlet style, elbow length) protect hands and forearms from spatter, hot metal and radiant heat. MIG and TIG welding requires different glove thickness — TIG gloves are thinner for better dexterity, MIG and ARC gloves are heavier.

Welding jacket or apron: Split leather or FR cotton jacket covers the upper body and arms. Essential on overhead or positional welding where spatter falls downward.

Steel-toe safety boots: Protect feet from falling spatter and dropped hot metal. Must be leather, not synthetic — synthetic melts. See our safety equipment catalogue for footwear options.

Respiratory and Hearing Protection

Respiratory protection: Welding fumes contain manganese, chromium and other toxic metals. For ARC and MIG welding in enclosed or poorly ventilated areas, use an FFP2 or FFP3 filtering facepiece or a half-mask respirator with P2 + OV filters. A fume extraction gun (for MIG) or a portable fume extractor is preferred for production environments.

Ear protection: Angle grinder and air-arc gouging noise exceeds 100 dB. Foam earplugs or earmuffs rated NRR 25+ protect hearing during extended grinding and gouging. Frequently Asked Questions

Which welding helmet shade is correct for MIG welding?

For MIG welding use shade 10–12 depending on amperage — higher amps need a darker shade. An auto-darkening helmet with adjustable shade 9–13 covers all processes including MIG, ARC and TIG without changing the lens.

Are leather welding gloves the same as regular work gloves?

No. Welding gloves are made from thick split or full-grain leather with a gauntlet cuff to protect the wrist and forearm. Regular cotton or synthetic work gloves are flammable and provide no protection against welding spatter or radiant heat.
