A carpenter needs: steel measuring tape (3–5 m), try square, marking gauge, vernier caliper, spirit level, and a folding or steel rule. Multi Trade Combines stocks Mitutoyo precision instruments, Taparia hand measuring tools and spirit levels at our AT Road, Guwahati counter.
Steel measuring tape (3–5 m): The foundation of all layout work. A 25 mm wide blade with a locking button and a positive-lock hook is the right spec for carpentry. Avoid narrow tapes for woodwork — they flex and sag over longer runs.
Try square: For checking and marking 90° angles on timber. A well-made engineer's try square (steel blade, hardened body) stays truer than a plastic combination square. Used constantly for checking door frames, stair strings and cabinet carcases.
Marking gauge: For scribing parallel lines along the grain — essential for tenon and rebate work. A wheel marking gauge with a micro-adjust screw is the modern preference for clean, consistent lines.
Vernier or digital caliper: For precise thickness measurement of timber, panel, dowels and hardware. A Mitutoyo vernier caliper is the benchmark in India — accurate to 0.02 mm, durable and widely used in carpentry, pattern-making and furniture-making workshops across the Northeast.
Spirit level: A 600 mm or 1000 mm spirit level is essential for setting out floor levels, installing shelving and fitting door frames plumb. For floor-to-ceiling work, a 1.2 m aluminium spirit level is the most useful length in a carpentry kit.
Folding rule or steel rule: For internal measurements in cabinets and drawers where a tape hook can't reach accurately. Browse our full measuring tools catalogue for available stock.

Both read to 0.02 mm accuracy. A Mitutoyo vernier caliper needs no battery and never loses its setting, making it the more reliable workshop tool. A digital caliper is faster to read but needs a battery and can fail from sawdust ingress. For woodworking, either works well — the vernier is more durable for site use.
A 5 m × 25 mm steel measuring tape with a locking blade and double-side graduation is the most useful for carpentry. Taparia and Stanley tapes are popular choices at our Guwahati counter.
